Table of Contents

Note: Compiling a definitive list of resources on college sports is nearly impossible, and we do not attempt to do so. Instead, we offer the materials below as a starting point for those interested in learning more about the central issues, narratives, and themes that define and inform college sports' history, current state, and future. In other parts of the website, we identify and discuss additional, relevant resources that users may find helpful. A few quick notes on the materials below:

The Resources Tab is a work in progress. We invite and encourage you to suggest additional materials.

I. DYK Website Charts

  • Website Charts provide detailed information on essential aspects of the current battle for control over the regulation of college sports.

II. Books

  • Books include selections from academic writers, sports journalists, and social/cultural commentators; these are “must-read” resources.

III. Articles

  • Articles identify a tiny fraction of mostly scholarly writings that illustrate essential themes in college sports. Given the breadth, depth, and quality of materials in this category, our list is admittedly modest, but we believe it may provide a launchpad for further inquiry.

IV. Speeches

  • Speeches offer commentaries on college sports from prominent public spokespeople, emphasizing speeches by NCAA Presidents, notably including those by Myles Brand (2003 - 2009). Brand’s articulation of the “collegiate model” of college athletics —particularly as a financial framework—is crucial to understanding the current business model and the relationship between college athletics and the values of higher education.

V. Reports

  • Reports include materials illustrating the decades-long attempts (primarily by institutional stakeholders) to reconcile the commercialization and professionalization of college sports with the values of higher education.

VI. NCAA Constitution

  • NCAA Constitution provides the draft history of the “new” NCAA Constitution ratified in January 2022. It provides insight into how the NCAA currently views its central mission, values, and purposes.

VII. Litigation Materials from Key Cases

  • Litigation Materials offers key pleadings, motions, orders, and documents from 21st-century lawsuits and agency actions that have influenced the current state of college sports or may influence its future.
